Mental Health Consumer Advocacy Program

This program is specifically designed to provide information, support and reliable legal advocacy to individuals and their families who self-identify as mental health consumers.

The goals of this program are:

  • To provide quality advocacy services to people living with mental illness.
  • To advocate for individuals to ensure that they have fair access to income support programs and services.
  • To link mental health consumers to appropriate community resources and facilitate links to services in the community
  • To empower individuals and the community by providing public education and encouraging self-advocacy
  • To provide consultation to caseworkers regarding their client’s issues.
  • To provide information, written materials and support to caseworkers, other service providers, family members of mental health consumers and the general public.

We provide information, advocacy and support for people of mental health consumers in the following areas:

  • Income Assistance Advocacy
  • Information on rights and responsibilities
  • Provide support in navigating the system and accessing benefits
  • Help with disability benefits application and appeals
  • Communicate with ministry workers on client’s behalf when necessary
  • Assist with income assistance appeals

Income Assistance

  • Information on employee rights and responsibilities
  • Assistance accessing employee benefits
  • Assistance with application and appeals for employee disability benefits
  • Provide information and representation at tribunals and appeals
  • Communication, mediation and negotiation with employers when appropriate

Residential Tenancy

  • Information on tenant rights and responsibilities
  • Mediation and negotiation with landlords when appropriate
  • Provide information and representation at Dispute Resolution Hearings when possible

Canada Pension Plan Advocacy (CPP)

  • Assistance with application and appeals for Canadian Pension Plan Disability benefits
  • Information about different programs under Canada Pension Plan programs 

Publications & Education

  • Public workshops, presentations and written materials provided to enable the general public and service providers

Services are currently available to individuals living in the Fraser Region including New Westminster, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Maple Ridge, Surrey, Delta, White Rock, Langley, Aldergrove, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Mission, and Hope.
